Within enterprise data centers, Hadoop is a shiny new toy—the same place where the mainframe is sometimes thought of as a dinosaur. Yet the two have some things in common. Both are used as large scale, high performance batch processing platforms. And now, many of the same independent software vendors (ISVs) that grew up with the IBM mainframe—BMC, Syncsort, and others—are selling Hadoop-compatible versions of the very same products they originally developed for the ‘frame many years ago. Here are some examples, starting with that batch processing commonality:
