WekaFS is a scale-out parallel file system targeted at high performance applications including new artificial intelligence systems. Weka is a relatively new implementation, optimized to take advantage of NVMe SSDs for high performance and low latency in demanding files-based applications and competes with GPFS (IBM Spectrum Scale), Lustre, and VAST Data. Previously, WekaFS was called WekaIO Matrix.
Parallel access is enabled with a POSIX client and scaling with data distributed across multiple nodes with a single namespace. A minimum of six nodes are required and Weka can scale to “1,000s” according to the vendor. Up to 1,024 file systems are supported.
The WekaIO software can tier data from SSDs to object storage using an S3 protocol. The object storage can be local, remote, or cloud-based. Tiering can be individually controlled for each file system group, set up by the administrator. Data protection is node-based as N+2 or N+4.
