WekaFS (formerly WekaIO Matrix) a Scale-out File System that is targeted for multiple uses beyond the typical high performance computing environment where most Scale-out File Systems have been deployed previously. Analytics and artificial intelligence are two of the areas of opportunity for usage identified by WekaIO (Weka). These new areas differ from most HPC usages in that many smaller files are utilized, which WekaIO has addressed with a new architecture with performance characteristics thatearlier designs, which did not anticipate the usage lack. Parallelism of data transfer is complemented with parallel transfers for metadata and optimization for the smaller files and the increase amount of metadata traffic with WekaIO.
Competitive products in the Scale-out File System area include IBM Spectrum Scale (GPFS) and Lustre, both with thirty year old designs in widespread used in HPC environments. Weka also sees competition with other new high end file and object solutions such as VAST Data. WekaIO has the opportunity to address newer usages that may still fit in HPC or become enterprise business critical operations. In addition to addressing the changing usage model for Scale-out File Systems, WekaIO has designed with the latest technology for storage. Optimization for flash devices and NVMe protocol give WekaIO an advantage over systems not designed to exploit the new technology effectively.
