Veritas is a major independent supplier of data protection and data management software. NetBackup is its flagship product for enterprise data backup and recovery. NetBackup is licensed as stand-alone software, it is sold pre-integrated in both scale-up and scale-out physical appliances, and it is available as an AWS Outposts Ready solution.
As of the 8.3 release in July 2020, NetBackup integrates with Veritas Resiliency Platform (VRP) and Veritas CloudPoint, to provide a more comprehensive solution that also addresses business continuity for critical applications, continuous data protection, and protection for cloud-native workloads. VRP will still be available as a stand-alone product, and CloudPoint will be exclusively sold integrated with NetBackup.
Veritas positions NetBackup as the centralized and single backup and recovery platform for customers, and the product serves as the foundation of Veritas’ Enterprise Data Services Platforms, which also includes Veritas’ InfoScale (storage virtualization), APTARE (infrastructure visibility and analytics), and Data Insight (metadata classification and analytics for visibility, data lifecycle management, data governance and security) products. As of June 2021 with NetBackup 9.1, APTARE machine learning and analytics capabilities have been integrated natively into NetBackup for trending, alerting and anomaly detection on backup data (useful for troubleshooting and for identifying ransomware).
Veritas NetBackup supports a wide range of data sources (over 800) and targets (over 1,400) for protection, making the software attractive as a single solution protecting many types of data. Sources include block storage systems, file servers, NAS (including support for NDMP), containers, and multiple hypervisors with virtual machines. With its long history of usage in enterprises, NetBackup supports many different operating systems (multiple variations of Linux, versions of Microsoft Windows, UNIX systems such as AIX, HP-UX, Solaris and BSD, Open VMS, and MacOS). The product also can protect cloud-native resources including Microsoft SQL, MongoDB and Oracle databases in the cloud. NetBackup 9, rolled out in January 2021, added native integration of OpenStack APIs, support for Microsoft Azure Stack Hub.
