Veritas NetBackup Flex Scale – Product Brief

Veritas launched its NetBackup (NBU) 9 data protection software (covered separately in Evaluator Group’s Data Protection Software Research) with its new scale-out deployment option, NetBackup Flex Scale, in January 2021. Evaluator Group also covers the Veritas Flex Appliance offering within its Data Protection Systems coverage.

NetBackup Flex Scale adds a scale-out option to the scale-up and cloud-based deployment options that already exist in the Veritas data protection portfolio. In being scale out, capacity and performance may be added independently, as they are needed. Like the scale-up NetBackup Flex Appliances, the scale-out Flex Scale nodes are delivered in a hyperconverged form factor based on off-the-shelf servers.

NetBackup Flex Scale runs the Red Hat Linux-based Veritas Optimized Operating System (VxOS). Veritas’ File System, Volume Manager and Cluster Server software provide the file system, volume management and clustering support.

NetBackup Flex Scale clusters may grow from four to 16 nodes, in increments of one node, for 448TB to 1.8PB of usable storage. Proprietary containerization software allows cluster-wide resources, including NBU data protection services, to be abstracted and automatically scaled across the cluster as nodes are added. Any ongoing backup and recovery jobs continue to run as the environment is scaled. Provisioning, load balancing and recovery operations also occur automatically – and the containerization and abstraction allows for a consistent experience across the customer’s various NBU deployments. The Flex Scale architecture includes isolated intra-node networking for faster performance of backup and recovery jobs. Deduplication is application-aware with both variable and fixed-length deduplication as well as client-side deduplication offered.
