Veritas introduced its Information Studio metadata classification and data visibility and lifecycle management product in June 2019. Information Studio is a component of Veritas’ Enterprise Data Services Platform software suite, which also includes the vendor’s NetBackup data protection, InfoScale high availability and disaster recovery, and acquired APTARE IT analytics software. Evaluator Group covers NetBackup in more detail in a separate Product Brief.
Veritas Information Studio connects into a variety of sources, including on- and off-premises file and object storage resources, applications (including NetBackup) and databases. The “Usage and Deployment” section of this report includes the full list of supported sources. The product deploys on an on-premises VMware ESX server as a single Open Virtual Appliance (OVA) file that contains an Information Studio Hub node, and necessary data engines. Certain sources require Windows Connector nodes. The hub serves as the central control point for data visibility/insights and for managing policies and workflows. The actual system metadata discovery and execution of jobs including classification and application of custom tags is handled by the data engines.
Classification is policy-based, it can be customized, and it can occur based on text extraction from data assets in addition to metadata. Information Studio includes than 700 preconfigured data classification patterns and more than 120 policies – for instance, to guide compliance to common data privacy regulations – that are maintained regularly by Veritas.
The enriched metadata catalog fuels Information Studio’s search, data visualization and lifecycle management capabilities. Policy creation and search are handled through the Information Studio user interface. Veritas licenses Information Studio as a stand-alone product, with subscription and perpetual license options.
