Veritas has continued to advance the capabilities of Data Insight with the integration of additional software to become their multi-cloud data management offering. Focused on unstructured data including files and application data, Data Insight has become a valuable tool for managing information assets.

Initially Data Insight was seen as primarily to be used for identifying security risks and taking action. Expanded with the integration of the Veritas Classification Engine and File Governance solution and the ability to archive data with use of Enterprise Vault, Data Insight has extended the use to include lifecycle management, capacity reduction (by virtue of the ability to archive or delete data based on criteria and user enablement), and compliance assurance.

Data Insight works with selected NAS systems from major vendors, and with applications such as Microsoft SharePoint and OpenText. Currently, Data Insight is not integrated with the very widely used Veritas NetBackup. The “Usage and Deployment” section of this report includes the full list of supported sources.

The product deploys on-premises with a Management Server that will contain the Data Insight Database with a catalog for unstructured data and as a VM in public clouds including Azure. Collector worker nodes are servers with software that scans filesystems and application data to collect information. Indexer worker nodes are servers with software that access events (logs) and filesystem metadata. This information is used for reports and management queries. Self-service portal nodes are software that connects to the Management Server and used for involving business users and for providing workflows for data ownership confirmation, security, and classification.

The Information classifier has over 900 patterns that represent sensitive information that may be a security risk. In addition to the data classification policies, over 140 policies regarding specific regulations relevant to countries and industries are used associate files with circumstances. There is an extensive set of capabilities regarding identification and manual or automated remediation to be taken.
