Tintri VMstore – Product Brief

Tintri is a virtual machine specific storage system that offers an all-flash storage system (earlier models were hybrid systems using disk drives for primary storage). NVMe SSDs including 3D NAND versions are used to provide an NFS or SMB accessed storage system. Initially, only VMware support was available but RHEL, OpenStack and Hyper-V have been added.

NAND Flash is used to enhance the performance of the log-structured filesystem at the core of Tintri systems. Use of flash accelerates write performance by allowing the system to acknowledge a write and then coalesce data before storing it across multiple solid-state drive modules. Recently accessed data is stored both in system DRAM and in a flash read cache, enhancing read performance.

The most unique feature of Tintri VMstore is the single focus on supporting applications running in virtual environments. Tintri supports only virtual machine hypervisor environments, doing so with NFS and SMB attached storage.

With Tintri’s focus on virtualized environments, they have optimized and customized their system design and graphical user interface (GUI) to operate as an extension of VMware vCenter and Microsoft Systems Center Virtual Machine Manager using Tintri Global Center software. Due to Tintri’s use of NFS and SMB, the embedded OS is able to correlate an individual virtual machine directly to a particular set of files on the Tintri system. As a result, Tintri’s GUI is able to provide detailed storage capacity and performance information for individual virtual machines.
