By running a hypervisor on the nodes of their scale-out storage system Pivot3 created one of the first hyperconverged solutions. The company initially built a business selling consolidated infrastructure systems in the video surveillance industry and then expanded into traditional data center use cases. They have two HCI product lines, one based on the vSTAC software platform and the other based on the new Acuity software platform. This product analysis covers the Acuity based HCI systems that leverage the Pivot3 vSTAC technology, but add Accelerator nodes providing an NVMe PCIe flash layer to the cluster in all-flash and hybrid storage configurations.
Pivot3’s HCI product is used as a VDI solution, as a remote office/branch office computing infrastructure, for server virtualization and private cloud implementations and as a consolidated compute and storage infrastructure. There are over a dozen vendors marketing HCI appliances, besides Pivot3. Competitive solutions include Nutanix, HPE SimpliVity, EMC VxRail, Cisco HyperFlex and Scale Computing, among others. These and the other leading products are included in the Evaluator Group Research Hyperconverged Comparison Matrix, Evaluation Guide and associated Product Briefs and Analyses.
