Last updated September 8th, 2019 for additions to the EvaluScale table. Concise and unbiased 9-page overview of the features and functionality of NetApp StorageGRID.

NetApp StorageGRID Webscale is the object storage solution to complement NetApp file and block systems.   StorageGRID is a distributed content repository using the object storage software with metadata controlled data management executing on servers in virtual machines and block storage attached to the physical servers  or  as  an  appliance  based  on  E-Series  storage.    The metadata  is  stored  in  a  distributed  relational  database  with distributed access.  Up to 70 PB of storage and 100 billion objects in a single namespace is supported.   StorageGRID also supports migration of objects to tape and supports 200 PB of data on tape. StorageGRID supports NetApp E-Series storage systems and disk shelves as well as third party storage for the software defined distribution  or  E-Series  storage  as  the  base  for  the  SG5660 appliance.

The origin of NetApp StorageGRID comes from the acquisition of Bycast  which  had  been  a  provider  of  federated  systems  with successes  in  the  healthcare  records  storage  and  management area.  NetApp has created a scaling object storage solution that uses the metadata features for data  management  with  the  ability  to  scale  across  geographies  or  in  a  single  data  center environment.
