Nimble CS Series – Product Analysis

Last updated December 19th, 2018 for general updates. 20-page deep dive into the architecture and capabilities of Nimble CS Series.

The Nimble CS Series Appliances are a family of custom designed hybrid storage systems for general-purpose shared storage.  Current models include the CS Series of 200, 300, 500 and 700 series systems. Nimble CS systems are a hybrid, SSD cache with HDD design that provides block, iSCSI connectivity.

Competitive storage solutions include Tintri, Tegile, HP StoreVirtual, Dell EQ and Compellent, SanDisk ioControl and other hybrid storage systems.  Additional information on these products is available in Evaluator Series Research (ESR) to authorized subscribers.

The Nimble Storage CS Series of solid-‐state technology storage systems combine NAND Flash storage as a read cache with spinning disk as backing store. All host accesses to data on the Nimble Storage system are through the solid-‐state storage which acts as a cache for data on disk. Nimble systems come in four product lines: “value-‐line” CS200, entry CS300, midrange CS500 systems and the largest CS700 systems. All models from the CS300 and above vary the amount of NVRAM, CPU, DRAM, and Flash SSD within the controller.

The Nimble Storage CS Series use standard server hardware and NAND Flash SSDs as a read cache along with high capacity 7,200 RPM disk drives. A base system has 12 HDD’s along with SSD devices in the first enclosure. CS200 systems can add a single expansion shelf while other models can add 3 additional shelves.  Each shelf contains both HDD and SSD devices,  although a new all flash shelf may be added to larger CS models.
