NetApp StorageGRID is an object storage solution available as software only or on appliances. StorageGRID supports up to 400 PB of storage and 100 billion objects in a single namespace. Larger capacity usage is supported but requires approval. StorageGRID also supports migration of objects to tape and supports 200 PB of data on tape. NetApp E-Series storage is the base for the StorageGRID appliances.

The origin of NetApp StorageGRID comes from the acquisition of Bycast, which had been a provider of federated systems with successes in the healthcare records storage and management area. NetApp has created a scaling object storage solution that uses the metadata features for data management with the ability to scale across geographies or in a single data center environment.

Access to StorageGRID is through S3 and Swift APIs for objects and with the use of the NetApp NAS Bridge, NFS and CIFS/SMB can be sued to store files as objects. Exploiting operations of the S3 protocol add to the capabilities of using StorageGRID as a content repository. Advanced features include the ability to make replicated copies at 16 locations and geographic dispersion to multiple locations. Tiering to Amazon S3, Amazon Glacier, and Azure Blob storage from StorageGRID enables a two-tier functionality.

Key competitors include IBM Cloud Object Storage, Scality Ring, Cloudian HyperStore, Dell Elastic Cloud Storage, and Quantum ActiveScale.
