NEC has offered enterprise storage for a number of years including block and file and as a backup to disk target with HydraStor. The M-Series is the SAN attached block storage offering with a number of models that vary in configuration but use the same underlying design and embedded software. The M-Series has both hybrid and all-flash models, which are designated by an F appended to the model number. The current generation is numbered Mx10 where x is the different model with an ascending number representing increased capabilities.
The architecture of the M-Series is based on an active-active dual controller design. The systems support only block access. A separate NAS gateway can be added for file access with the M-Series supplying block storage for the gateway and for independent access directly.
All systems use the same embedded software with functions supplied either as basic, no-charge software called “standard” or additional capabilities for additional charges called “optional software.” The software is grouped into “packs” for convenience. Software features included in the base price include snapshots, synchronous and asynchronous remote replication, VVOLs and VASA support.
The dual controllers are packaged in either 4U or 2U enclosures depending on the model along with either 24 2.5” devices or 12 3.5” devices. Additional devices can be added with enclosures of either 12 3.5” devices in a 2U enclosure or 24 2.5” devices in a 2U enclosure.
