The Lenovo V3700 (originally the IBM Storwize V3700) is an entry block-storage system capable of expanding to 240 devices and with the ability to migrate data from 3rd party storage systems. The V3700 is a storage system based on the IBM Spectrum Virtualize software providing a common architecture and code base across a range of storage systems. The V3700 can have single or dual nodes and is expandable. The V3700 includes many of the base features available with the IBM Storwize V7000 but does not allow for real-time compression of primary data or external virtualization of 3rd party storage.
The functionality of the V3700 is the generally same as the IBM Storwize V7000/V5000 and SAN Volume Controller (SVC) and uses the exact same software. One exception is the V3700 does not scale beyond a single dual controllers system at this time. The management of the V3700 is a web-based GUI that has been adapted from the IBM XIV system. Different than most other storage systems, the advanced features are pre-installed on the V3700 with many being included in the base price of the system. Additional cost features are enabled with license keys.
An optional turbo performance mode is available which removes code delays that were added to the I/O operation in non-turbo mode.
The V3700 is targeted as an entry level general purpose, block storage system for use in environments where cost is a major issue. The large capacity, advanced features, and the performance give the V3700 capabilities much greater than expected for entry level systems.

The Lenovo V3700 system is based on the Spectrum Virtualize software which brings high level functions and maturity. The V3700 is no longer offered by IBM and is sold by Lenovo as part the agreement when Lenovo acquired the System X business from IBM.
Advanced features of replication, snapshot and tiering to clouds are very complete implementations. The V3700 added storage pooling with dynamic block assignment (called distributed RAID by IBM) but continues to use copy-on-write snapshot technology rather than redirect-on-write. We would expect this to change, providing the more efficient redirect-on-write snapshots.
Evaluator Group believes the V3700 systems will eventually be replaced by Lenovo with a product unrelated to the IBM heritage.
