Silk markets all solid-state storage systems software, supplying software and specific hardware configurations to Tech Data who sources the hardware, then builds and delivers the all flash storage systems to customers.
Silk offers its Kaminario platform on an OPEX qualified, pay for consumption basis. This service is available via Tech Data’s Tech as a Service (TaaS) program.
Silk’s Kaminario operating platform called VisionOS, is a software-defined, scale-out architecture based on clustering of nodes. It offers advanced functionality to distribute data, load balance, and perform parallel I/O with the ability to store information and protect data. Additional advanced features include encryption, snapshots and asynchronous periodic replication of snapshots. Kaminario systems are designed for high availability with dual controllers per node, component redundancy and RAID data protection. There are always two controllers in an active/active, stretched cluster configuration so that high availability is achieved via failover between controllers. For the purposes of STaaS where capacity monitoring is a critical enabler of capacity-based consumption pricing, we also note that data deduplication can be selectively turned on or off on a per volume basis
The scale out-capability of the Kaminario system allows it to be deployed in environments where storage demand is growing, and both capacity and performance can be addressed economically by adding additional nodes when needed. Customers acquire Kaminario software via a license or subscription.
