Igneous was formed in October 2013 by veterans from Isilon and NetApp. Evaluator Group covers Igneous’ core product, a scale-out data protection solution known as Igneous DataProtect, in more detail in a separate Product Brief. This document focuses on a complementary product, Igneous’ DataDiscover management software for unstructured data, initially launched in Oct. 2018.
DataDiscover creates a cataloged metadata index as well as a dashboard and a user interface that customers can use to obtain visibility and to centrally control data movement, governance and protection. It supports unstructured files exclusively; support for objects is on the roadmap. It does not support structured data sources, virtual machines (VMs) or containers. DataDiscover complements DataProtect and DataFlow, a data mover initially announced alongside DataDiscover and launched as a stand-alone offering in March 2020. Together, the products comprise what Igneous calls its “Software-as-a-Service Unstructured Data Management” capabilities.
For DataDiscover, Igneous wrote its own crawler called “AdaptiveScan.” According to Igneous, DataDiscover can deploy tens or hundreds of crawlers in parallel, allowing new and changed files to be indexed at the scale of up to 17 billion files per day, per task. Threads are dynamically re-allocated while scanning as source storage system resources change, to avoid impacting production workloads’ performance. Igneous manages the scan process remotely.
Collected metadata is fed into Igneous’ “InfiniteIndex,” which according to Igneous can scale to trillions of entries. In addition to being able to scan for and update the index as files change, the crawler also tracks and accounts for all data movements managed by Igneous, so that the files can still be found.
