The IBM TS7770 is a virtual tape library (VTL) that backs up mainframe tape images onto a disk-based system with the option to tier data off to a physical tape system or to a number of public clouds.
The TS7770 replaces earlier models (7720, 7740 and 7760). It addresses backup needs for System Z Systems mainframe environments using 16 Gbps FICON interfaces or Ethernet for cloud tiering. It can be deployed as a single node or in a high availability (HA) grid of up to eight nodes. Only compression is used for data reduction. Synchronous and asynchronous replication options are included for business continuity. The TS7770 is designed to be integrated with System Z and DS8900 storage for efficiency and for data security. The TS7770 uses IBM Power servers and IBM V5030 disk storage as disk cache.
TS7700 systems are fully integrated with IBM’s physical tape offerings, an area in which IBM continues to invest, for long term retention and archive. IBM also recently introduced “Transparent Cloud Tiering,” which delivers the public cloud as a tier of storage through IBM Cloud Object Storage to IBM Z Systems environments, including those with TS7770.
