This Product Brief focuses on several backup to disk solutions that are included in IBM’s data protection portfolio. The IBM TS7700 and ProtecTIER systems are a backup-to-disk solutions that include compression and/or deduplication to improve storage efficiency. The original ProtecTIER systems from IBM was the result of the acquisition of Diligent Technologies.
The TS7700 system consists of three models (7720, 7740 and 7760) to address backup needs for mainframe (System Z) environments using 16 Gbps FICON interfaces. These systems can be deployed as a single node or up to 8 nodes in an HA grid. Only compression is used for data reduction on the TS7700. Synchronous and Asynchronous replication options are included for business continuity. The TS7700 is designed to be integrated with System Z and DS8880 storage for efficiency and for data security.
The TS7700 systems are fully integrated with IBM’s tape offerings, an area where IBM continues to invest, for long term retention and archive. IBM also recently introduced Transparent Cloud Tiering delivering the cloud as a tier of storage through IBM Cloud Object Storage to IBM Z environments, including those with TS7700.
The ProtecTIER TS7260 and TS7650G are backup targets for open systems backup software which can be configured as a Virtual Tape Library (VTL) emulating popular tape libraries and tape drives, as a NAS target communicating over CIFS or NFS protocol, or as an OST (OpenStorage Technology) controlled device. For VTL, the backup software communicates over Fibre Channel and for NAS or OST, the connection is over Ethernet. The TS7260 is an integrated appliance for small to medium environments while the TS7650G is deployed as a gateway which supports various IBM disk storage systems on the backend. These products have been withdrawn from the market as of May 2018 but according to IBM will be replaced in the future. End of support is July 2019.
