IBM Spectrum Protect Plus is the modern complement to IBM Spectrum Protect (formerly Tivoli Storage Manager; see Evaluator Group’s separate Spectrum Protect Product Brief). It was
designed to protect and recover virtualized environments; today, the product supports applications, containers, databases, files, and virtual machines (VMs). IBM Spectrum Protect Plus also enables the reuse of secondary datasets for purposes other than data protection. The software can be implemented standalone, or it can be integrated as a feature extension of Spectrum Protect, whereby Spectrum Protect serves as a data offload target. Additionally, it is available on the AWS Marketplace.
Ease of use and management simplicity, supported through its agentless approach and the ability to deploy the software as a self-contained, pre-configured Open Virtual Appliance (OVA), are key design aspects of Spectrum Protect Plus.
Sources for data protection are the application/database, container and VM datastores – as well as AWS EC2 EBS snapshots and Windows file systems. Physical and virtual databases supported include including IBM Db2, Microsoft SQL Server, MongoDB, and Oracle databases hosted in AWS. Also notable is support for Microsoft 365, VMware Cloud on AWS VMs, and Microsoft Exchange instances running in AWS. IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments and IBM Spectrum Protect Plus add support for the VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisors.
IBM Spectrum Protect Plus natively integrates with Kubernetes and supports Container Storage Interface (CSI) snapshots and Red Hat OpenShift Container Storage to allow persistent container data to be backed up, recovered, and stored for long-term retention. Developers can independently back up and recover logical persistent Kubernetes volumes. These activities as well as replication to a secondary site and migration to long-term retention storage can also be controlled on a policy-driven basis.
