IBM Spectrum Protect Plus – Product Brief

IBM Spectrum Protect Plus is the modern complement to IBM Spectrum Protect (formerly Tivoli Storage Manager; see Evaluator Group’s separate Spectrum Protect Product Brief). It was designed to protect and recover virtualized environments; today, the product supports applications, containers, databases, files, and virtual machines (VMs). IBM Spectrum Protect Plus also enables the reuse of secondary datasets for purposes other than data protection.

IBM Spectrum Protect Plus can be implemented standalone, or it can be integrated as a feature extension of Spectrum Protect, whereby Spectrum Protect serves as a data offload target. Additionally, it is available on the AWS and Microsoft Azure Marketplaces, as well as on the IBM Cloud. In 2021, IBM Spectrum Protect Plus was incorporated into IBM Spectrum Fusion, which fuses Red Hat OpenShift and containerized versions of Spectrum Scale scale-out file system, Spectrum Discover for search and metadata indexing, and Spectrum Protect Plus for container and virtualization backup (see Evaluator Group’s Technical Insight report for more information).

Ease of use and management simplicity, supported through its agentless approach and the ability to deploy the software as a self-contained, pre-configured Open Virtual Appliance (OVA), are key design aspects of Spectrum Protect Plus.
