IBM DS8000 – Product Analysis

This document provides an overview and analysis of the IBM System Storage DS8000.  The DS8000 is IBM’s high-end enterprise disk system supporting both mainframe and open system attachment.  IBM has continued to enhance the DS8000 with new models since it was first announced on October 12, 2004 and became generally available on December 3, 2004.  The DS8880 is the latest version with mulitple models that was announced in October of 2015.  The DS8870 model, available in October of 2012 is being replaced with the new models that use the Power 8 processors. In January 2017, IBM announced the DS8880F, which is the designation for the all flash models of the DS8880 along with Gen-2 Flash Enclosures. The DS8900F all flash model which uses Power 9 processors was announced in September 2019.

The major competitive systems that support both mainframe and open systems attachment include the EMC VMAX³ and PowerMax, Hitachi Data Systems VSP G1500, and HPE XP7.
