HYCU provides data protection software that can be deployed either on-premises or in the cloud. The product was originally
created by, and later spun off from, Comtrade Software. HYCU was initially released as a data protection software for Nutanix environments. Its support and deployment options have since been expanded; a version is available for VMware environments
and it can be deployed in Google and Microsoft Azure public clouds. In addition, HYCU Protégé was introduced in mid-2019 as HYCU’s multi-cloud data protection solution.

HYCU software is focused on providing simple-to-use backup for hyperconverged and cloud-based sources. HYCU advertises the
solution as simple enough to learn in four minutes, to deploy in three minutes, and to recover in two minutes. It features onetouch backup capabilities, automation of recovery workflows, and a self-service portal to simplify the user experience. Backups with HYCU are impact-free and do not require agents.

Data protection with HYCU is application focused. The product automatically discovers applications where they are running across virtual machines (VMs) and provides application-aware backup and recovery, including application-aware storage level snapshots.

HYCU is deployed as a VM image and can use NFS or SMB file shares, S3 object storage, or iSCSI LUNs as a backup target. Backups are done based on policies defined by backup frequency, retention period, and placement.
