Dell EMC SRM – Product Brief

Last updated December 11th, 2019 for end of year updates. Concise 5-page overview of the Dell EMC SRM.

The Dell EMC SRM (also known as Dell EMC ViPR SRM) is the third generation of SRM from Dell EMC, following Dell EMC ControlCenter and Dell EMC ProSphere. The Dell EMC software solution is targeted to encompass not only the traditional storage monitoring and reporting functions, but be fully aware and integrated with VMware.

Dell EMC SRM does information collection and system monitoring to provide an extensive and customizable set of reports, dashboards, and alerting on changing conditions in the storage environment. The SMI-S industry standard, CLIs, and vendor APIs are used to collect information from storage systems, switches, and host bus adapters for status and configuration information allowing Dell EMC SRM to support heterogeneous platforms without the need for agents. Agents may be installed on servers for environments that have restrictions about providing credentials for access. Threshold and configuration change alerting is done through the management console, APIs, email and SNMP traps.

Installed as a vAPP (with Windows or Linux binary installs also available), Dell EMC SRM uses multiple virtual machines for database collection, maintaining a database of the configuration and logged events, and collectors for information from the environments. In addition to the SRM console web GUI, Dell EMC SRM integrates with VMware vSphere with announced plans for VMware vCenter Operations Console and VMware vCloud Automation Center for advanced controls and status integration.
