Dell EMC Data Domain – Product Analysis

Last updated June 7th, 2019 for general updates. 15-page deep dive into the architecture and capabilities of EMC DataDomain.

Dell EMC Data Domain is a deduplication system used for backup, compliance archiving, and long-term storage. There are a wide range of Data Domain models to cover the spectrum from remote office, mid- sized organizations and large enterprises as well as a virtual appliance. Data Domain systems are offered as appliances, paired systems for global deduplication and as an archiving system in conjunction with Dell EMC’s “Cloud Tier” feature. Virtual Tape Library mode enables the Data Domain to act like a tape system in addition to the NAS access. The published deduplication results are from 10 to 30x but depend greatly on the data being deduplicated. Key to the technology is the use of software using general purpose CPU’s to deduplicate data inline during the transfer to disk storage connected to the controller. Data Domain established the market for backup to disk systems and are widely deployed.
