Dell EMC introduced its PowerProtect DP Series Appliance family in November 2020 as the next generation of its Integrated Data Protection Appliance (IDPA) portfolio.
Like the IDPA family, Dell EMC positions the PowerProtect DP Series as an all-in-one, converged solution that includes storage hardware, data protection software, search capabilities, analytics and cloud readiness under centralized management and a single user interface. A number of Dell EMC technologies go into the architecture including Dell EMC PowerEdge servers, PowerProtect DD (formerly Data Domain) inline deduplication, VMware, Avamar backup software and Data Protection Advisor along with many other components. All these components are pre-installed and configured into an appliance for simple and rapid deployment. There are model options that cover the spectrum from remote office, mid-sized organizations and large enterprises.
The PowerProtect DP Series supports physical and VMware virtual environments as well as a range of applications (the full list is included in the “Usage and Development” section of this report). It provides application-consistent virtual machine (VM) image backups, recovery of individual files to complete VMs to the appliance, disaster recovery to the cloud, and automated monitoring, analytics and reporting, and search. Tiering of data to the cloud for long-term retention and a space estimator tool for required long-term retention capacity are also included.
Dell EMC has a lot of experience with data deduplication and years of real-life deduplication results. The published deduplication rates for PowerProtect DP are 65:1 but as always, depend greatly on the data being deduplicated and the data protection strategy used. Dell EMC guarantees that level of deduplication for qualified customers with its Future-Proof Loyalty Program.
