Dell PowerProtect Data Manager (Data Manager) is a data protection solution that was introduced into the Dell portfolio in July 2019. Data Manager is available as a subscription (stand-alone software and as a component of the Dell Data Protection Suite). It runs on industry-standard hardware and can also be deployed in Amazon Web Services (AWS) to protect in-cloud workloads. In addition to being deployable stand-alone, previously Data Manager was also available in an integrated appliance form factor, Dell PowerProtect X400, built on Dell PowerEdge servers; PowerProtect X400 was discontinued in Aug. 2020 in favor of emphasizing the stand-alone options.
Data Manager software can protect a variety of databases, Kubernetes container environments, VMware applications on-premises and in the cloud, as well as Windows NTFS and some Linux filesystems. Sources are automatically discovered and, via a policy engine, backed up. A configurable search engine is automatically deployed during the Data Manager software installation, allowing specific VM file copies to be located and restored by backup administrators. Additionally, data owners can execute backups and restores on an on demand, self-service basis with centralized oversight and governance.
In addition to being able to be deployed in the AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) clouds, Data Manager can back data up, restore data, and tier data to AWS, Microsoft Azure and GCP clouds for archiving and long-term retention.
Data Manager software includes SaaS-based monitoring and reporting (for example, of meeting recovery point objectives) as well as application of retention locks. It leverages a microservices architecture for simplified scalability and upgrades as well as a quarterly cadence for feature additions and updates.
