DataCore SANsymphony – Product Analysis

Note: Evaluator Group research of Storage Virtualization has been discontinued. The following Product Analysis has been archived and is no longer being maintained for updates as of January 2023.

DataCore Software provides storage area network (SAN) virtualization software to provide virtualization of storage attached to a computing element running its SANsymphony software. There are two offerings for the software. The first is as an appliance running on Intel-based processors connected to a SAN. The second instantiation of the software is installed on a virtual machine (VM) to operate as a Virtual SAN (vSAN), providing shared storage capabilities for internal flash and attached storage. The features that the software enables for customers include:

â–ª Virtualization of heterogeneous storage controlled by the SANsymphony software
â–ª Attachment of heterogeneous servers to storage with no server software required
â–ª High availability (HA) with N+1 scaling (SANsymphony) or paired controllers
â–ª Up to 64 nodes in a configuration
â–ª Volumes may be shared between cooperating servers by assigning read / write (R/W) privileges
â–ª Centralized administration through a centralized management console
â–ª Security control for attached storage
â–ª Enables advanced features, such as snapshots, replication, migration, and data caching
â–ª Enables the flexibility of booting any server from a SAN virtual disk
â–ª Thin provisioning of volumes with space reclamation
â–ª Adaptive caching with large (1 terabyte (TB)) data caches
â–ª Integration with VMware vCenter and SRM
â–ª VMware vStorage API for Array Integration (VAAI) support
â–ª Auto-tiering movement of data between devices based on access frequency
â–ª Consistency groups for replication and snapshots
â–ª Cloud target for auto-tiering including Amazon S3, ECS, etc.
â–ª Random write accelerator
â–ª Automation for virtual desktop creation and administration
â–ª Virtual disk compression and deduplication as background activity
â–ª Integration with backup software
â–ª Optimizations for use of solid-state drive (SSD) as cache
â–ª Quality of service (QoS) controls
â–ª Transparent migration
â–ª Container orchestration
â–ª Cloud monitoring with Datacore Insight Service
