Commvault HyperScale X – Product Brief

Last updated July 27th, 2020 for new model. Concise and unbiased 6-page overview of the features and functionality of Commvault HyperScale X. Includes overview, usage and deployment and EvaluScale reviewing methodology and more.

Commvault HyperScale X is the next generation of Commvault’s HyperScale family of scale-out data protection solutions, replacing earlier models from a go-to-market standpoint (as of July 2020, HyperScale v1.5 appliances will be sold through the end of the year to existing customers who wish to expand their capacities – after which point, they will no longer be sold).

Where the first generation of HyperScale appliances leveraged Red Hat Gluster FS scale-out software-defined file storage, the HyperScale X models leverage Commvault’s Hedvig software-defined storage, acquired in September 2019.

HyperScale X is available as a family of hardware appliances using Commvault-branded server nodes (manufactured by Fujitsu) or as a software-only solution deployed on server nodes from one of several OEM partners.

Hardware Appliance

HyperScale X hardware appliances consist of clustered server nodes (in increments of one after the initial three-node configuration). The 2300 model was designed for midsized enterprises, with each three-node block holding 12 internal HDDs with capacities up to 14TB. The 4300 model was designed for larger enterprises, with each three-node block holding 36 internal HDDs with capacities up to 14TB. Each node also has a NVMe drive for dedupe performance and two eight core (2300) or 20 core (4300) processors. An optional FC or SAS host bus adapter (HBA) is available for tape out or LAN-free backups.

HyperScale X uses Commvault Hedvig software-defined file storage system to provide a scale-out file system to share storage between nodes. The scale-out nature of Hedvig’s software helps to accelerate backup and recovery performance at scale, and also adds redundancy in the form of being able to sustain availability during multiple concurrent hardware failures. The solution also has automatic load balancing and rebalancing of stored data across nodes, copy data management, and detection of anomalous behavior for ransomware prevention – in addition to Commvault Complete capabilities such as metadata cataloging.
