Cohesity SmartFiles – Product Analysis

Cohesity SmartFiles is software to build a scale out NAS system that is also the filesystem SpanFS from Cohesity DataPlatform. DataProtect, a separate offering from Cohesity, is a distributed, highly scalable storage system designed to function as a consolidation point for a variety of secondary data storage workloads and as an integrated backup and data management solution. SmartFiles has a clustered, scale-out architecture with each node providing storage capacity, processing power and networking connectivity. The software is intended to run on standard servers with captive storage.

SmartFiles software is available for customers and integrators to build complete, scale out systems. Natively a NAS system with support for file protocols of NFS and CIFS/SMB, SmartFiles also supports S3 protocol for object storage and access, mapping objects to files in the system.

There are a few scale out NAS systems available in the market and a few offerings of software to build scale out systems. Cohesity has a somewhat unique place with SmartFiles software and the DataPlatform product that uses SmartFiles.
