Cohesity Helios is a data management solution that provides a unified platform for a number of Cohesity data management services. Helios looks to solve data fragmentation issues while providing a single interface for data management services and operations across multiple locations including data centers, public clouds, and edge devices. The Helios solution is available as self-managed software as well as a SaaS solution.
Helios utilizes the Cohesity DataPlatform as an underlying technology for indexing data across multiple sources. Cohesity DataPlatform is a distributed file system that functions as a consolidation point for a variety of data storage types as well as an integrated backup solution – all managed through a single global user interface. Evaluator Group covers Cohesity from the data protection and NAS perspectives in separate documents; this document covers Cohesity Helios and the underlying DataPlatform as a multi-cloud data management solution.
Cohesity DataPlatform catalogs metadata as a part of the backup process. It includes an engine that performs cataloging automatically at ingest, globally tracking high-level indices such as file names and metadata as well as higher-level objects such as Virtual Machine Disks (VMDKs) and virtual machines (VMs). Into the index engine, Cohesity built a MapReduce function that provides real-time insights without requiring an external business intelligence (BI) tool. Metadata can be analyzed at the file, storage system and virtual machine (VM) level.
The Helios solution provides a single unified layer to visualize and manage this data from a single GUI. Helios is capable of providing a number of Cohesity services including data protection, site continuity, and analytics at cloud-like scale managed through a single interface. In addition, Cohesity provides a marketplace for users to procure additional data management services.
The Cohesity Marketplace, which was introduced in 2019, sells third-party and Cohesity-developed applications that run on Helios. Cohesity customers can download and deploy apps directly from their Helios user interface, offering an experience similar to the Google Play Store and Apple iOS App Store. Among the notable multi-cloud data management-related applications include Cohesity’s Runbook data management automation and orchestration and its Spotlight log analytics applications, and the third-party SentinelOne threat prevention app.
