Evaluator Group covers Cohesity from several angles, including as a scale-out NAS system (Cohesity SmartFiles) and as a Multi-Cloud Data Management
(Cohesity Helios). This research focuses on Cohesity DataProtect as a data protection offering.
Cohesity brought its first solution to market, a hyperconverged data protection appliance that integrated its DataProtect backup and recovery software with partners’ hardware, in 2015. While these systems remain in deployment in customer environments and available for purchase through Cohesity partners, Cohesity has since evolved to a software-led model. This includes adding the ability for deployment in the public cloud and through Cohesity’s data management-as-a-service (DMaaS) portfolio.
Cohesity DataProtect and Cohesity Helios will be available as a part of the IBM Storage Defender cyberresiliency solution, effective C2Q23 and announced in
March 2023.
Usage
Cohesity DataProtect can serve as a consolidation point, replacing multiple systems used for backup, user files, test and development copies, data analytics, and other secondary storage use cases. Cohesity provides a fully integrated solution replacing backup hardware and software, it can be deployed as a stand-alone software solution supporting third-party storage targets, or it can serve as a stand-alone deduplicating backup appliance, for instance replacing a Dell EMC Data Domain (now Dell EMC PowerProtect DD) system.
