Cohesity DataProtect is a software module for data backup and recovery, that is delivered through Helios, Cohesity’s unified management platform. Helios provides the control plane that is common to, and that runs, all Cohesity services including DataHawk, DataProtect (backup and recovery), FortKnox (Data isolation), SiteContinuity (disaster recovery) and SmartFiles (unified file and object). It exists as a foundational technology and does not require an extra license. Under Helios, the data plane and the control plane exist independently. While the control plane is hosted in the public cloud, the data plane can be deployed on the customer’s desired infrastructure.
Cohesity DataPlatform provides several foundational data protection features including automated global indexing, compression, global, variable-length deduplication (in-line and post-process), erasure coding, encryption, replication and snapshotting via Cohesity SnapTreeTM technology. According to Cohesity, SnapTreeTM allows for consistent and low latency recovery of applications and files regardless of the number of snapshots taken – providing the foundation for its Instant Mass Restore recovery at scale capability. Cohesity’s SmartFiles Views feature automates disaster recovery orchestration, allowing customers to test disaster recovery scenarios and automatically failover and failback at scale. DataProtect adds capabilities including policy-based automation of protection jobs, and global visibility and metadata searching (across all clusters under Cohesity’s management, when integrated with Helios), and mobility of data to the public cloud for archive and long-term retention.
