Cohesity DataPlatform is a distributed file system that is designed to function as a consolidation point for a variety of data storage types and as an integrated backup solution, all managed through a single global user interface. Cohesity DataPlatform catalogs metadata for supported sources, as a part of the backup process. It includes an engine that performs cataloging automatically at ingest, globally tracking high-level indices such as file names and metadata as well as higher-level objects such Virtual Machine Disks (VMDKs) and virtual machines (VMs). Into the index engine, Cohesity built a MapReduce function that provides real-time insights without requiring an external business intelligence (BI) tool. Metadata can be analyzed at the file, storage system and virtual machine (VM) level.
Cohesity developed a its own consistent, distributed NoSQL database for tracking and managing metadata across all nodes in the cluster. The metadata database is stored on the solid-state drive (SSD) tier to accelerate I/O (Input/Output) operations. Incorporated is Cohesity’s SnapTreeTM snapshot technology, which provides a distributed metadata structure based on B+ tree concepts versus the more common link-chain metadata journaling. This allows for unlimited and frequent snapshots that are fully hydrated with no performance degradation.
The Cohesity metadata database enables rapid search and recovery capabilities at a granular level or at scale. It is accessible through SQL queries, allowing customers to create custom reports and dashboards using BI tools.
