Note: On Dec. 14, 2020, Actifio was acquired by Google. The future disposition of the product set is unknown. This Product Brief is intended as reference material for existing Actifio customers.
Actifio was founded in 2009 and is largely recognized as the pioneer of copy data management (CDM), which is the process of virtualizing copy data for backup, disaster recovery, and data reuse (e.g. analytics and test/dev), to avoid creating redundant copies of production data.
Actifio creates a “golden image” of data from which users generate virtual (as opposed to physical) copies. Data is captured
and backed up in an incremental forever, application-consistent manner, natively at the block level. Enterprise databases, onpremises and cloud-based virtual machines (VMs) and physical servers are supported, as per the service level agreements (SLAs) specified by the customer.
For the virtual copies, Actifio also handles data lifecyclemanagement and mobility across the heterogeneous multi-cloud sources supported. The result for customers is streamlined data management, reduced risk, faster user access, and reduced storage infrastructure costs.
Data can be backed up concurrently to multiple targets, including on-premises object stores and public cloud storage services (including cross-cloud and to a colder archive tier). For security purposes, the “golden image” is immutable, Actifio leverages the
immutability capabilities (e.g. write once read many, WORM) of underlying storage (e.g. IBM Cloud Object Storage and Dell EMC PowerProtect DD), and role-based access control (RBAC) can be applied.
