Hyperconverged Infrastructure Gains Acceptance by Enterprise IT with 79% of Large Enterprises Expanding its Use

Tuesday, March 19th 2019

New research from Evaluator Group looks at how enterprises are evaluating and deploying converged and hyperconverged infrastructures.

BOULDER, Colo., March 19, 2019 – Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) is growing in enterprise IT and being used for more mission-critical workloads.  Companies using converged infrastructure (CI) and those using HCI are increasing their commitments to these technologies, with the primary driver for CI and HCI projects being consolidation of IT infrastructures and simplification of their environments. The new Evaluator Group report “Converged and Hyperconverged Infrastructure in the Enterprise 2019” focuses on how the enterprise’s perception of these technologies has evolved over the past 3 years. It also looks at comparing the two architectures and where they are deployed, which products are being considered, how they are evaluated and what their relative strengths and weaknesses are.

“Converged Infrastructure and HCI continue to be seen as a medium to simplify and consolidate the current environment,” said Camberley Bates, Managing Partner, Evaluator Group.  “Both will prevail, as clients look at the trade-offs of performance and costs.”

The initial study in 2016 made it clear that HCI had a place in large companies, but was not across all applications.  So, in addition to asking what products were chosen and the use cases, last year’s study added questions about why not HCI, which workloads or use cases were not a good fit for this technology, and what the reasons were for that determination.  In 2017, the top use cases “where not to use HCI” were Mission Critical and Databases.  Opinions have definitely shifted to where “None” was the top answer in 2019.  The study goes on to reveal where Converged Infrastructures will remain strong versus the use of HCI.

The objectives of this year’s study were to compare products, decision variables, use cases, and other specifics about HCIs in enterprise environments with last year’s data. This year, questions about CI were added as well, specifically:

  • Which CI products they are using or evaluating
  • What use cases and attributes drove them to consider a converged solution (or to not consider
  • What characteristics of this technology were most important to their decision

“HCI has crossed the threshold in the enterprise data center. The majority of IT organizations we surveyed are now comfortable using HCIs for their most important workloads. That said, there are still factors that preclude its deployment in some use cases. We cover those drawbacks, and show which technology is better, CI or HCI, across a range of characteristics.”

Evaluator Group new research study was created by conducting an incisive survey and in-depth interviews with IT professionals from enterprise-level companies where a CI or HCI solution was in use or in production and those from companies where CI and/or HCI were in evaluation or were expected to be evaluated. Interview respondents represented differing responsibility levels, from executive to operational administrator, and were distributed across most of the industries surveyed.
