World-renowned IT analysis company, Evaluator Group, recently released a technical evaluation report on Huawei OceanProtect Backup Storage. Based on actual environments, Evaluator Group’s rigorous assessment concluded that: Huawei OceanProtect Backup Storage features fast backup and recovery, efficient data reduction, and high reliability backup storage system designed for protecting key application data for large enterprises; OceanProtect warrants evaluation by enterprises as a tool to address data protection pain points relating to cost, data growth and the need for continuous uptime.
As digital transformation and data volumes continue, enterprises are also experiencing increasing threats. As a result, IT departments are focusing on building data protection infrastructure that can quickly and efficiently protect critical enterprise information affordably.
Evaluator Group’s lab worked with Huawei to conduct One Node performance testing on the Huawei OceanProtect purpose built backup appliance and a leading competitor’s system. The results showed several advantages vs. a leading competitor, including:
• OceanProtect delivered an average of 2X higher backup performance
• Huawei OceanProtect delivered consistently higher data reduction rates
• OceanProtect provides greater data availability by using triple parity RAID and independent controllers accessing a shared storage pool
Huawei OceanProtect’s ability to optimize I/O paths means that it can deliver high-speed backup and recovery operations. OceanProtect uses a multi-node, distributed parallel architecture that allows performance to scale linearly with multi-stream, parallel backups to accelerate performance. Additionally, Huawei’s use of all-flash storage significantly enhances the system’s ability to maintain high backup and recovery performance. In contrast to many traditional backup appliances use of spinning media, OceanProtect’s SSD media provides consistent performance, improving both backup and recovery operations.
OceanProtect uses deduplication, compression, and compaction technologies to deliver high data reduction ratios, helping customers optimize their investment in storage hardware, increase effective capacity, and reduce total cost of ownership (TCO). OceanProtect uses advanced algorithms to accurately slice written data by identifying data flow features. Inline, variable-length deduplication, feature-based compression, and byte-level compaction technologies are also used to reach higher data reduction rates.
Huawei OceanProtect was found to provide approximately 49% greater data reduction rates than a leading competitor, depending upon the application and data type being protected. With greater data reduction rates, OceanProtect can help reduce the number of backup appliances, also lowering power, space and cooling requirements, enabling Huawei to reduce the cost of ownership.
Huawei OceanProtect Backup Storage uses an active-active, fully redundant hardware architecture that enables critical data protection or recovery tasks to complete in the event of a hardware failure. This fully redundant architecture is complemented by the use of triple-parity RAID (RAID-TP) technology that tolerates the simultaneous failure of up to three disks, delivering 99.9999% availability according to Huawei testing. Additionally, data consistency verification ensures data integrity and validity.
