Technical Insight: Containers 101
 
Server virtualization has revolutionized IT, simplifying infrastructure, reducing costs and allowing applications to be easily moved between physical hosts. But in response to a need for improved mobility, vendor independence and further cost reduction, the industry is turning to containers. This technology has found strong support in test and development departments and in the dev/ops community in particular.

 
Industry Update: Microsoft Storage Spaces Direct
 
Microsoft Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) is a software-defined storage solution that runs in the Windows Server 2016 kernel, providing shared storage between server nodes in a cluster without requiring a hypervisor. S2D nodes can be configured as hyperconverged or as storage only, allowing either scale-out storage or hyperconverged clusters to be created. This technology brings a number of disruptive capabilities to the growing Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI) market.
 
Industry Update: Formation Data Systems

Formation Data Systems is adding asynchronous replication to their FormationOne software-defined storage (SDS) platform. The new “SafeGuard” feature provides replication between a FormationDS storage system in the primary data center and another in a remote location, including the AWS cloud or any S3-enabled object storage system. Companies can operate a FormationOne system in both public cloud or private cloud environments.
