Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) projects are experiencing significant interest from both business and IT users. Evaluator Group has been speaking with a number of organizations piloting and deploying VDI projects. Successful VDI deployments have common aspects that deliver both the user experience desired, while meeting the cost and operational efficiencies’ desired.
In particular, success as measured from users perspective requires little impact on their work environment. The experience should be seamless, with no perceived performance issues. IT personnel often justify VDI projects based upon the ability to provide enhanced security with improved IT centralization. Finally, financial departments and CIO’s look for project costs to meet the original goals.
Balancing these outcomes requires systems designed and optimized for VDI environments. The alternative is over-provisioning resources or performance that does not meet expectations, both of which can halt VDI projects from moving to wide scale use.
In this paper Evaluator Group explores the critical success factors for VDI deployments, and in particular the storage system requirements that are critical for VDI projects to meet their cost, performance and reliability goals.
