Short Description:

Within the last few months Evaluator Group has seen a surge in interest in Storage Resource Management (SRM) applications among our enterprise storage user clients. This paper outlines the business and use cases for implementation

Full Summary:

Within the last few months Evaluator Group has seen a surge in interest in Storage Resource Management (SRM) applications among our enterprise storage user clients. We believe this is happening for at least four reasons:
1.       Networked storage environments are finally perceived to be too large and complex to manage and support or service efficiently. The ability to measure performance within the I/O chain from server to storage array is critically important to advancing server virtualization projects
2.       Headcount within the IT operations management group is frozen at current levels while storage growth continues at levels that are unsustainable given status quo hiring policies
3.       Server virtualization projects are forcing administrators to develop a more comprehensive view of their storage environments to assure performance and availability. In many cases the need for a more comprehensive view now includes the ability to develop reporting capabilities to be used in resource chargeback
4.       IT operational groups (server, network, and storage administration) are beginning to converge and need some common focal points from which to manage IT infrastructure. An SRM application is now seen as both a management and a decision support tool that can be used across server, networking, and storage domains.

This paper uses a case study of NetApp to make the business case for implementing SRM across the enterprise.
