DataCore SANsymphony-V – Product Analysis

Full Summary:

DataCore Software provides SAN virtualization software to provide virtualization of storage attached to a computing element running their SANsymphony software. There are offerings for the software: the first is as an appliance running on Intel-based processors connected to a Storage Area Network. The second instantiation of the software is installed on a virtual machine to operate as a Virtual SAN providing shared storage capabilities for internal flash and attached storage.

DataCore has been a provider of SAN virtualization (block-based) software since 1999. The SAN virtualization software runs either as a Virtual SAN or on standard Intel-based servers and virtualizes the attached storage and provides advanceddata services features. The SAN virtualization software is called SANsymphony. DataCore enables many capabilities with the virtualization solution and this document is an analysis of the software. In general, the document will cover SANsymphony but will note the differences for the Virtual SAN usage where appropriate. SAN Symphony-V for virtualized environments was released in January of 2011. For a more detailed explanation of virtualization, the white paper available on should be referenced. The Evaluator Group terms this type of SAN virtualization solution an “In the Data Path solution.” It is also called a “symmetric pooling” solution.
