Both are looking to reduce the pain associated with exponential data growth most data centers are experiencing. Data de-duplication began to emerge roughly ten years ago, but has only recently become a mainstream technology. Just three years ago, the topic of data de-duplication was new to many people not intimately involved in creating or promoting these products. This year, de-duplication has emerged as a mainstream technology. In the next several years, data de-duplication will likely become as common as point-in-time copy and RAID technology are today.
